Biography

Born in Canada to Lithuanian parents, Joanna Shimkus made a name for herself appearing in movies like All About Loving (1964), Woman in Chains (1968), and The Uninvited (1969) before she got the starring role in The Virgin and the Gypsy (1970), where she repeatedly revealed rack and garnered a nomination for the Laurel Award for Female Star of Tomorrow. In 1976 Joanna married pioneering actor Sidney Poitier and bore him two daughters, including Death Proof star Sydney Tamiia Poitier. It looks like Sydney inherited her mother’s good looks, but there’s no word yet on whether she also inherited the boob-baring gene.
